The Viet Nam War Essay

This was the first essay I did for the Culture and Language II class.

The Viet-Nam War
By Paulina Ortega

The Viet Nam War was a long war that lasted around 15 years. The United States got involved in the war by selling them the weapons and also by sending their soldiers to fight. During the 60’s, the young Americans did not support the war because it was unfair to them, so they made protests in order to convince the government to stop the war. Even so, the war went on and many people died.

Viet Nam had been a French Colony. After WWII, the some Vietnamese wanted to become an independent country so they began riots to get rid of the French and of the Japanese invaders during WWII. In 1954, the Vietnamese succeeded under the command of Ho Chih Minh (a communist activist). This is when the Democratic Republic of Viet Name is established in the North of the country. Meanwhile the French were still in South Viet Nam. When they wanted to unify the country with elections, they were blocked by the South. Soon, the Vietnamese from the North turned against the Vietnamese from the South.

As we all know, those were the times of the cold war between the United States of America and the Soviet Union. So, in the Viet Nam war these two countries took opposite sides. The Democratic Republic of Viet Nam in the North was supported by the Russians and the Chinese, while the United States, Australia and New Zealand were with the South (Republic of Viet Nam).

The first intervention of the United States was by sending military counselors; but it became more “personal” when these counselors were being attacked. Then they sent their troops to fight. More than half a million soldiers were sent.

The battles were very cruel. All kinds of weapons (except nuclear) were used.

Young people of those times didn’t want the war. They were aware that innocent people were dying. These young people got together and made peaceful protests with the goal of persuading the government to sign peace and remove their troops from Viet Nam. They wrote songs and they fought hard for their beliefs.

In the end, the Vietnamese became a known independent country. But the lives of the people who died in battle were never recovered.
